Rachel Mackey Lewis Sawyer

   Rachel Mackey Lewis Sawyer, 88, of Lake Road, Hertford, NC, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2019, in Brian Center Health & Rehabilitation.

   Mrs. Sawyer was born September 26, 1930, and grew up in Gates County, the daughter of the late Hance and Ruth Baldwin Mackey Hofler. A retired teacher’s assistant in the Perquimans County School System, she was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and its Adult Choir.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Carl Wilson Lewis, Sr.; by her husband of 10 weeks, Jimmy Sawyer; her sister, Edna Hofler Krutler; two brothers, Richard Hofler and Hance Hofler, Jr.; and by a step-daughter, Jacki Alger.

   Surviving are two sons, Carl Wilson Lewis, Jr. of Hertford and James Mackey Lewis of Washington, DC; two sisters, Dawn Lane of Tyner and Myrtle Hendricks-Corrales of McLean, VA; a brother, James Robert Hofler of Kill Devil Hills; three grandchildren, Carol Tarkington and husband, Kenneth, of Camden, Trey Lewis of Hertford, and Alan Lewis and wife, Ashley, of Wake Forest; four great-granddaughters, Rachel Tarkington, Kensey Tarkington, Porter Maria Lewis, and Marnie Paige Lewis; and her sister-in-law, Doris Kemp of Hertford.

   Also surviving are Jimmy’s children, Connie Stallings and husband, John, of Greenville, Jeanne Overton and husband, Crafton, of Hertford, and Ricky Sawyer and wife, Dolly, of Elizabeth City; grandchildren, Geoff Stallings, Shannon King, Jennifer Tunnell, and Chris Sawyer; and eight great-grandchildren.

   A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, and will be conducted by the Rev. Reggie Ponder.

   The family asks that flowers be omitted, and contributions be made to the Oak Grove U.M.C. Cemetery Fund, 775 Chapanoke Road, Hertford, NC 27944.
