Nellie Ashley Harrell

   Nellie Ashley Harrell, 79, of 222 Crescent Drive, Hertford, NC, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.

   Mrs. Harrell was born in Perquimans County on March 18, 1944, and was the daughter of the late Raleigh Edward and Donnie Mae Monds Ashley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Benjamin Leon Harrell, a sister, Hope Twine, and by a brother, Roy Ashley.

   A homemaker, Mrs. Harrell loved spending time with her family and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her absolute pride and joy. In earlier years, she faithfully volunteered and attended many of her children’s school functions.

   Surviving are her two daughters, Sheila H. Onley (Aubrey) and Donna Phelps (John), both of Hertford; two sisters, Maybelle White of Hertford and Faye Twine of Tyner; two brothers, R.E. Ashley and Gerald Ashley, both of Edenton; five grandchildren, Ashley Hudson (Jacob), Lesley Phelps (Liliana), Michael Phelps, Ryan Onley (Payton), and Darin Onley (Jordyn); and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Lydia Hudson.

   Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and will be conducted by the Rev. Carroll Bundy. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service and other times at Sheila and Aubrey’s home, 701 New Hope Road, Hertford.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
