John Larry Denson, Sr.

   John Larry Denson Sr., 75, of 1642 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC, died Sunday, May 10, 2020 in his home following a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his death.

   Born in Norfolk, VA on March 4, 1945, he worked as a sheet metal mechanic as a young man. He became a fighter and showed his strength early in life after suffering a stroke at the age of 36. This didn’t stop him from enjoying spending time with his family and spending time outdoors hunting. John also enjoyed poker nights, watching wrestling, and going to the go-kart track with his grandson.

   He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Burrell Denson James, and by his son, Robert Denson.

   Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Charelene Richardson Denson; a son John Denson (Jill); a daughter, Yvonne Honza (Chris), all of Hertford; three brothers, Billy Denson of South Mills, Swepson James (Debbie), and Fred James (Cathy), all of Chesapeake, VA; a sister, Louise Dufresne (Edward) of Lunenburg, MA; nine grandchildren, Stephanie Bateman (Casey), Brittany Griffin (Shaine), Jamie Blocker (Gage), Robert Denson, Robin Ciuffetelli (Ricardo), Megan Denson, Abby Todd, Maci Denson, and Taylor Honza; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

   Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Elizabeth City, and will be conducted by Pastor Kevin Bettinger. Friends may join the family at the residence immediately following the graveside services on Thursday.
