James Calvin Coston was born on January 11, 1943 in Tyner, North Carolina to the late Marion Lee Coston and Millie Brown Coston. He transitioned to his heavenly home on November 9, 2021.
James was preceded in death by his lovely wives, Bessie Jordan Coston and Hester Inell Holley Coston. He found companionship again with Daisy Atkins.
James was one of nine children: Marion Overton (deceased), Marion Lee Coston, Jr. (Harriett), Samuel Coston (Celeste), Lloyd Coston (deceased), Herman Coston (Diane) (deceased), Linda Bond, Haywood Coston (Grendaline), Carolyn Harris (George)
James is survived by his six daughters and one son, Darlene Coston of Greenville, Nicole Coston of Durham, Jamie Coston of Wilson, Paula Freeman (Joey) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Phyllis Ascott (Frank) of Hillsborough, Joivonni Ewing (Timothy) of Durham, and Jaleel Coston of Edenton. He is also survived by 16 loving grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.
James had a long career as a machinist at Edenton Cotton Mill and worked there for over 25 years. He had an entrepreneurial desire to found his own business, which started his passion for landscaping and birthed the business which is now locally known as “The Yard Doctor”.
He was a long time member of Center Hill Chapel Baptist Church. During that membership he sang in the choir, completed their yard work, and was a leader in the church becoming a trustee and later a deacon.
James was well known, liked, and respected in the community. He made an impressive impact on many people, being caring, passionate, funny, and by far a very loving and understanding individual.
James loved all his family and cared for them deeply. When he was called by any of them he didn’t hesitate to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.
Special thanks to those who went beyond and above to assist our family during our loved one’s illness. A really big special thank you goes to Yadi Chavez (Grandaughter), Korynn Brooks (Granddaughter) Ms. Daisy (Lady Friend), Carolyn and George Harris, and Stop Shop of Edenton. We greatly appreciate from the bottom of our hearts the time that has been taken out to support James. We are truly thankful for family and friends like you. You have been a source of strength. We thank you all so much for everything.
