Mrs. Hare was born on October 10, 1949 to the late Essie Jarman DeCamp. Three days later on October 13th, she was brought to Chowan County and adopted by Coke and Mary Davis Nixon. Raised in the fellowship of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, she began at an early age playing the piano by ear, and worshipped the Lord and blessed others with her God given talent. Later after marriage to David James Hare, she moved her membership to his home church, Ballard’s Bridge Baptist, where she was the church pianist for nearly 45 years, was active in the Adult Choir, and served in the Good Samaritan Circle. A homemaker, wife, and mother, she was also a retired bookkeeper, working for several area businesses through the years.
In addition to her parents, Coke and Mary Nixon, her birth mother, Essie J. DeCamp and step-father, Guy DeCamp, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Nate Kruk.
Surviving with David, her husband of 54 years, are their four children, Tammy Downum (husband, John) of Edenton, David Hare of the home, Danny Hare (wife, Sarah) of Tyner, and Tim Hare (wife, Marielle) of Granite Quarry; and 11 grandchildren, Jack, Patrick, and Hank Downum, Olivia and Daniel Hare, and Kayleigh, Justin, Andrew, Sidney, Gabby, and Mary Hare. Also surviving are two sisters, Diana Sykes and Sue Mumford; and three brothers, Eddie, Warren, and Chip Sumrell.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Ballard’s Bridge Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastors Junior White and Buck Leary. The burial will be private. Mindful of conditions associated with the Covid-19 Pandemic, no formal visitation will be held, however friends are welcome to visit with the family at their home. Masks and social distancing practices should be followed with these visits as well as when attending the service. For those who wish to stay in their automobiles while parked on the church yard, and not go inside for the service, it will be broadcast on FM 93.2
