William Harrison Toney, Sr.

   William Harrison Toney, Sr., 88, of Hertford, NC, passed away Friday, October 29, 2021 in his home.

   Mr. Bill Toney was born in Carlisle, WV on March 27, 1933, and was the youngest of 14 children born to the late Carl Arthur "Kit" Toney and Winnie Thompson Toney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 12 of his siblings.

   A veteran, he retired as a Sergeant First Class with the Army following 20 years of service, having served as a medic in Korea, Germany, and Vietnam. Following his military career he worked and retired as the business manager for Tidewater Community College in Portsmouth, VA.

   Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Barbara Pyroth Toney; two sons, William H. Toney, Jr. (wife, Katie) of Hertford and Carl Michael Toney (wife, Sharon) of Manteo; a sister, Patsy Speca of Baltimore, MD; two grandsons, William "Will" Toney, III (wife, Aaren) and Matthew "Matt" Toney (wife, Ashley): six great-grandchildren, Jordan, Garrett, Nathan, Eli, Madeleine, and Oliver; as well as nieces and nephews.

   A memorial service will be held at a later date.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Albemarle Home Care & Hospice, 1507 North Road Street, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.

   Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral and Cremation Providers, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
