William Henry Heriford, 91, of 241 Hickory Fork Road, Edenton, NC, passed away on Friday, December 21, 2018, in his home. Mr. Heriford was born June 8, 1927, in Gentry County, Missouri, and was the son of the late William James and Audra Power Heriford. After an early graduation from high school, he entered service in World War II, first in the Merchant Marines spending several years in the South Pacific Theater of Operations, and then in 1946 enlisted in the Army and served in Japan with I Corps. In 1951 he graduated from the University of Missouri, in 1952 from the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and in 1956 from the Midwestern Baptist Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. He pastored churches in Missouri for more than 30 years before entering the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for further education. He served first at UNC-CH as an Associate Director of the Extension Division, and later as the Director of Continuing Education. The planning for, and the building of, The UNC Friday Center was under his direction. Surviving are his wife of over 66 years, Helen; three daughters, Robyn Helene Gardner, Megan Paige Heriford, and Laura Dilys Heriford; a son, James Morgan Heriford; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
