Virginia Rountree Smith

   Virginia Rountree Smith, 94, of 980 Sandy Cross Road, Hobbsville, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 10, 2023 in her home where she was surrounded by her family.

   Mrs. Smith was born in Gates County on June 26, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah Rountree. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Edward Lee “Smitty” Smith; and by four sisters and four brothers.

   A homemaker, wife and mother, in earlier years she had worked as a switchboard operator at the old telephone company in Elizabeth City and had helped her father in the family’s community general store.

   A faithful member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church, she worked in many of the churches ministries and sang in the adult choir. She will be remembered by many in the community for her uplifting visits to the shut in, and the many good home cooked meals and goodies she often provided others.

   Surviving are her children, Angela Sary of Edenton, Carla Williams (husband, Worth) of Carrollton, GA, Thomas Lee “Tommy” Smith (wife, Susan) of Belvidere, and Wade Smith (wife, Cheryl) of Camden; 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

   Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 13th, at 11:00 a.m. in Sandy Cross Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Bob Young. The burial will be private in the Rountree Family Cemetery near the home. Friends may visit with the family in the social hall immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
