Velma Long Spruill

   Velma Lee Long Spruill, 82, of 157 Spruill Road, Roper, NC, died Friday, September 25, 2020 in her home where she was cared for by her family.

   Mrs. Spruill was born in Columbus County on December 24, 1937, and was the daughter of the late Nolon F. and Inez Nobles Long. A retired nurse, she worked at Chowan Hospital in Edenton for 29 years, and was a faithful member of Scuppernong Church of Christ.

   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Ward and Doris Strickland; by a son-in-law, Clarence Chappell, III; and by infant twin grandsons, Bryan and Ryan Chappell.

   Surviving are two daughters, Vickie Harris (and husband, Norman), and Sharon Chappell (and companion, Mark Symons); two sisters, Debbie Etheridge of Whiteville and Brenda Hilbourn of Cerro Gordo; a brother, Nathan Long of Chadbourn; four grandchildren, Travis Harris (Angela), Jared Harris (Desiree), Heather Dalcourt (Michel), and Ryan Harris (Chelsea); and three great-grandchildren, Thomas Harris, Caleb Dalcourt, and Layla Harris.

   A memorial service will be held Monday at 3:00 p.m. in Scuppernong Church of Christ and will be conducted by her longtime pastor, Cleve Edwards. A private burial will be in the church cemetery. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, no formal visitation is planned, but friends are invited to visit with the family immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
