Shirley Parker Eure, 86, of 1381 NC 137, Eure, NC, died Friday, December 22, 2023, in her home, the day before her 87th birthday.
Mrs. Eure was born in Gates County on December 23, 1936 and was the daughter of the late Thomas Earl and Nellie Lilley Parker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 62 years, James Alton “Mole” Eure, Sr.; by her son, James A. Eure, Jr.; and by her son-in-law, Tom Powell, Jr.
For many years Mrs. Eure was an Avon Sales Representative and also worked in the Ahoskie Department Store. Spare moments were spent staying busy with her hands, making quilts for family members, or to exhibit at craft shows along with her needlework and the things that Alton made in his shop. Active in the Gatesville Extension Homemakers Club, many will remember, and still talk about her French Apple Pies, made for shows and bake sales or enjoyed at church functions. Willing to share the recipe, the ingredient it didn’t include was the fact that she and Alton drove to the mountains, bought their own apples, came home, and made the pie filling from scratch.
Faithful in service to the Lord through her membership in Cool Spring Baptist Church, she taught children’s Sunday school to the preschoolers, taught Mission Friends, and worked yearly in the Vacation Bible School program.
Surviving is her daughter, Shirley Paige Eure Powell of Eure; and her sister, Rachel P. Allen (husband, Terry) of Gatesville. Also surviving are her granddaughters, Sara P. Turner (husband, Jeffrey) of Eure and Tommi Powell (husband, Jack Norton) of Cary; and three great-grandchildren, Josie, Charlotte, and Levi. She was always quick to let everyone know how much she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 29th, at 11:00 a.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastor Eric Bass. A private burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family at the residence on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, on Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m.; or in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cool Spring Baptist Church, P.O. Box 10, Eure, NC 27935.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Gentiva Hospice and its nurses, Yvette, Tamika, and Delores, and to friend and caregiver Wanda Knight for the comfort they gave Mrs. Eure in her long period of declining health.
