Rodney Tuttle Harrell, Jr., 90, of 602 E. Church Street Extended, Edenton, NC, died Friday, October 11, 2019, in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Harrell was born in Chowan County on March 5, 1929, one of four children born to the late Rodney T. Harrell, Sr. and Bessie Leary Harrell. Retired as a rural carrier with the Edenton office of the US Postal Service, he later cut and sold wood for decoy carvers to craft their work, and over the years developed many lasting friendships through that trade. A member of Edenton Baptist Church, he had served in the United States Army.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Brunson Harrell; and by his brothers, Robert S. “Bob” Harrell and J. Scott Harrell, Sr.
Surviving are his son, Rodney Elliott Harrell and wife, Debbie, of Wake Forest; his sister, Marion Cross Goodman of Edenton; two grandchildren, Cori Lynn Harrell Nix (Adam) and Benton Elliott Harrell, both of Raleigh; and two great-grandsons, Luke and Logan Nix. Also surviving is Willie Drew of Edenton, a longtime faithful family friend and companion, who was thought of by Mr. Harrell as another son.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 23rd at 11:00 a.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. David Brooks. A private burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a reception and time of visitation in the fellowship hall immediately following the church service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932.
