Robert Edward White, 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Creswell, NC on July 31, 2020.
Mr. White was born on August 11, 1941 in Windsor, NC and was raised in Edenton. He attended Edenton High School with his brothers, Jimmy and Bruce, and excelled in sports there including baseball, basketball, and football. As an Edenton Ace, he was named All-Conference, All-Eastern, was a member of the 1954, 1956, and 1957 championship football teams, and was awarded “Most Athletic” upon graduation.
After high school, Robert attended East Carolina University where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He spent his career in service to others starting out as a manager at Sears where he was instrumental in providing financing to families for necessary home goods. He also spent years providing skills training to enable success in the workforce through private enterprise, ECPI, and the State of Virginia.
Robert was passionate about golf, history, his beloved dogs, and his home in the country in Washington County. He loved his family and friends, and it was said his door was always open. However, he would often joke that he enjoyed his own company best.
The son of the late Bruce N. White, Sr. (Glayds M. White, lovingly referred to as “Mama Gladys”) and the late Edith Garrett Leary, he was also preceded in death by his brother, James E. “Jimmy” White.
Surviving are his daughter, Elizabeth Strohman (Jim); his son, Robbie White (Julia); and grandchildren Andrew Strohman, Caroline Strohman, and Sophie White. Also surviving are brothers, Bruce N. White, Jr., Allen White (Donna), Scott Leary, Steve Leary (Jim); and sister, Jean White Harrell (Bill). He will also be missed by his numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
