Robert Leroy Phelps, Sr.

   Robert Leroy Phelps, Sr., 83, of 1217 Barber Road, Roper, NC, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023 in ECU Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

   Mr. Phelps was born in Washington County on January 3, 1940 and was the son of the late Loomis Bobby “L.B.” Phelps and Mary Frances White Mason. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepmother, Olivia Langer Phelps; and half-sisters, Elizabeth “Sissy” Phelps and Shirley Wetzer.

   A graduate of Creswell High School and a veteran of the Marine Corps, he retired as a Merchant Marine Engineer following 40 years of employment. He was a member of the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association, Scuppernong Church of Christ, and Unanimity Masonic Lodge #7 in Edenton. An avid sailor, he also loved to fish.

   Surviving is his wife of nearly 58 years, Martha Twiddy Phelps; a son, Robert L. “Bobby” Phelps, Jr. (wife, Missy) of Cape Carteret; a sister, Mitzi Sexton of Perry, Ga; a half-sister, Betty Sue Gibson of Monks Corner, SC; a half-brother, Charlie Phelps of Pensacola, FL; and other extended family members and friends.

   A memorial service will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Scuppernong Church of Christ and will be conducted by Minister Todd Respess.
