Robert Shirley Harrell

   Robert Shirley “Bob” Harrell, 93, 1601 Virginia Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 17, 2019, in Gates House Assisted Living.

   Mr. Harrell was born in Chowan County on April 16, 1925, and was the son of the late Rodney Tuttle Harrell, Sr. and Bessie Leary Harrell. A graduate of the University of Richmond and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, he was a retired Baptist Minister and pastored churches in Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. From 1962-66 he served as Superintendent of Missions for the Chowan Baptist Association, from 1966-69 was the Assistant to the Chairman of the NC Good Neighbor Council (during the Civil Rights Movement), was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Edenton, Post #40 of The American Legion, and had served as Director of the Albemarle Learning Center for 8 years. A World War II veteran, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant and received his wings in the US Army Air Corps serving from 1943-45 where he was a co-pilot on the B-24 Bomber.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 68 years, Janie Mitchener Harrell; and his brother, J. Scott Harrell, Sr.

   Surviving are three daughters, Sheryl Harrell Pollard and husband, Gerald, of Cary, Susan Harrell Birckhead and husband, Thomas, of Edenton, and Robin Harrell Kimmel and husband, Steve, of Greensboro; his sister, Marion Cross Goodman, and his brother, Rodney T. Harrell, Jr., both of Edenton; six grandchildren, Mitch Pollard and wife, Katie, Brian Pollard, Ashlee Birckhead, Kendall Hollowell and husband, Heath, Lauren Dickey and husband, Joseph, and Janie Kimmel; and four great-grandchildren, Knox Pollard, Jasper Hollowell, Harper Pollard, and Rosalie Hollowell.

   Friends may join the family Friday, March 29th, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, and all other times at the Birckhead home, 1537 Virginia Road, both in Edenton. The family will have a private burial on the Mitchener Family Plot in Beaver Hill Cemetery where military honors will be rendered.
