Philip Gene Hohenstein, 84, of Hertford, NC, and formerly of Queensbury, NY, went home to be with his heavenly father on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 from Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Hohenstein was born in Albany County, NY on July 12, 1938 and was the son of the late Willard Fred and Ethel Louise Weatherwax Hohenstein. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 44 years, Carolyn Odessa Eisele Hohenstein.
A pharmacist, he retired as Chief of Pharmacy at Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, NY. A member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons where he was a sponsor for the Order of Demolay, while a member of the Sandy Hill Masonic Lodge #4 in Hudson Falls, NY he had served as Past Master, Past District Deputy Grand Lecturer, and as Past District Deputy Grand Master. Other membership included service as both the Grand Patron and District Deputy Grand Patron in The Order of the Eastern Star. A devout Christian, he lastly attended and enjoyed fellowship in First Presbyterian Church in Edenton. Gene was an avid bowler having bowled with the Glen Falls Hospital League for an amazing 25 years consecutively. Other enjoyments included gardening where he once built an outside model train track course within the garden, and he also loved to play golf.
Surviving are his three sons, Philip Gene “P.G.” Hohenstein, II of Santa Barbara, CA, Preston Gregory Hohenstein and wife, Maisiris, of Charlotte, TX (and their three sons, Peter, Preston, and Paul), and Pryce George Hohenstein and wife, Hope, of Hertford (and their three sons, Pierce, Padraic, and Peyton); and a sister, Barbara Hohenstein-Taylor of Albany, NY.
In accordance with his wishes, no services are planned.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation with a special thanks at the end to nurses: Brandi, Kim, and Tami, to the Administrator: Tina, and to the Director of Social Work: Carol; and lastly to Gentiva Hospice for the wonderful care and attention provided to Gene and family during this time of need.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a hospice organization of one’s choice.
