Osie Lee Cooper, 88, of 516 Dobbs Street, Hertford, NC, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2025, in his home where he was being cared for by family.
Mr. Cooper was born in Gates County on November 30, 1936, and was the son of the late Ivie Anderson Cooper and Mae Boyce Cooper. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Faye Spruill Cooper, sisters, Annie Mae, Delia, Iola, and Clarine, and by brothers, Ivie, George, Horace, and Roland.
Retired as a painter from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he was an avid outdoorsman and loved to hunt and fish. A veteran, he retired as a Sergeant First Class from the Army National Guard.
Surviving is his daughter, Nona Self (Mike) of Hertford; his son, W. Lee Cooper (Beth) of Port St. Joe, FL; four grandchildren, Tim Chappell (Jordan), Tyler Chappell (Brittany), Shawn Silver (Tara), and Kahli Deschaw (Ricky); five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Nathan, Landen, Carson, and Tucker; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Graveside services with military honors will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, and will be conducted by his grandson, Pastor Tim Chappell. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for the dedicated care given to Mr. Cooper during his time of need.
