Opal Iola Howell Askew, 94, formerly of 95 White Oak Road, Eure, NC, and more recently of The Gates House Assisted Living, Gatesville, died there on Tuesday, July 25, 2023.
Mrs. Askew was born in Martin County on January 14, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Mills Howell and Bessie Piland Howell Rountree. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H. Glenn Askew whom she married on Valentine’s Day in 1957; by her sister, Blanche Andrews; and by brothers Kent and Gene Howell.
With her husband she was the retired owner and operator of Western Auto and White Oak Shopping Center. Before working in the family business, she had taught Science and Physical Education at Western Branch Middle School. She was a member of Eure Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Robert Erwin Ferguson, Glenn Allen Askew (wife, Janice), and John Mills Askew (wife, Janet), all of Eure; five grandchildren, Robin Tidwell, Ashley Stallings (husband, Shelton), Leeza, Sarah, and Kent Askew; and two great-grandchildren, Abigail and Logan Stallings.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 28th, at 3:00 p.m. in Eure Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Dr. Wayne Proctor. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service, or all other times at 95 White Oak Road, Eure. A private burial will be in the Askew Family Plot at Cool Spring Church.
