Pearl Oneida Caddy Cartwright, 95, of 1290 New Hope Road, Hertford, N.C., entered eternal rest on Thursday, March 14th, 2024, from Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City, N.C., following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late Ulric Calvin and Pearl Jordan Matthews Caddy. She was married to the love of her life, the late Whit Cartwright, for 58 years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Ann Dail (husband, Lloyd) and S. Louvinia Narron (husband, Leslie); son-in-law, Charles J. Janak; two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Rue and Lizzie Lee Boyce; and by two brothers-in-law, Leroy and Tom Cartwright.
Surviving is her daughter, M. Annette Janak of Stone Ridge, VA; two grandchildren, Christopher C. Janak (wife, Melody) of Austin, Texas and Amber E. Zaharchuk (husband, Dave) of Burlington, Connecticut; two great-grandchildren, Austin C. and Charlotte E. Janak; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Mrs. Cartwright was the oldest member of the Berea Church of Christ, having attended services there beginning at six weeks of age. She grew up in a close-knit Christian family enjoying fun times with numerous relatives on both the Caddy and Jordan/Matthews sides of the family. Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, quilting, and gardening. She was a great cook and famous (perhaps infamous to those counting calories) for her 14 Layer Chocolate Cake and special cornbread. She and her two sisters were quite a trio throughout their lives; she and her first sister often made their baby sister roll her eyes at their antics – even into their 70s and 80s. A fond remembrance expressed by many is that the sisters always had smiles on their faces and were ready to assist anyone who needed them. She spent many years lovingly caring for her invalid mother and her dad. Her special neighbors and friends are too numerous to list; she loved and appreciated all of them. During her later years, the kind assistance given by neighbors, friends, and family members enabled her to fulfill her great desire to continue living in her own home. She was a loving, supportive mother to her daughter and grandchildren, and a doting “GG” to her great-grandchildren, all of whom admired her cheerful outlook, strength, independence, and selflessness. She was indeed a positive role model for all those who knew her.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 23nd, at 11:00 a.m. in Berea Church of Christ, with Minister Lee Modlin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the social hall of the church immediately following the services on Saturday and other times at the residence.
Memorials contributions may be made to Berea Church of Christ, 1664 New Hope Road, Hertford, NC 27944. Condolences may be mailed to her daughter, Annette Janak, at 24791 Gypsum Way, Stone Ridge, VA 20105.
