Norma “Jean” Hall Peters

Norma “Jean” Hall Peters, 82, of Edenton, NC, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2025, in her home surrounded by family.

Jean was born in Story County, IA on August 18, 1942, and was the daughter of the late Melvin Ernest and Pearl May Mason Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Gene Peters, Sr.; brothers, Donald and Russell Melohn; and by two great granddaughters.

Jean taught school for many years, mostly as a Camanche, IA sixth grade English teacher. She took her job seriously and dressed professionally every day. Jean and Ken traveled extensively throughout their marriage and visited all 50 States, with a long trip to Alaska, her favorite. Jean had many hobbies. She crafted stained glass, crocheted many baby blankets, weaved baskets, designed jewelry, quilted blankets, quilled beautiful cards, and created wicker wrapped vases, just to name a few. If she was sitting her hands were busy. She was also a member of several women’s groups in her retirement and loved to make things to help others. She sewed hundreds of blankets and walker aprons as gifts to nursing home residents, and she made countless masks to donate during COVID. She crafted many beautiful items for her friends and family that will continue to be cherished. Jean spoiled her treasured dog, Sadie and jokingly informed her daughters that she was their sister. She loved visits from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren more than anything. She will be dearly missed by all that loved her.

Jean and Ken were blessed to share 54 years of marriage. When Ken passed in 2017, Jean mourned him deeply. Theirs was truly a love to envy. Her best friend, Julie Harrington, was a comfort to Jean during their weekly conversations that could last for hours. Jean’s handyman, Rick Elkins, and his son Chris, were also a blessing to Jean following Ken’s death. They became friends and Jean loved them and they her, like family.

Surviving are her three daughters, Anne Battle of Newport News, VA, Laurie Tuman and husband, Wesley of Elizabeth City, and Rebecca Clarke and husband, Aaron of Fuquay-Varina; a son, Kenneth G. “Kip” Peters, Jr. and wife, Jodi of Newton, IA; fourteen grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

In accordance with her wishes, a private family celebration of her life will be held.
