Nanette Jones Cohoon, 92, of 1164 Ocean Highway North, Hertford, NC, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 4, 2024.
Mrs. Cohoon was born in Nash County on August 22, 1932, and was the fifth child and only daughter of the late Benjamin Britton Jones and Alice Sawyer Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Abel Cohoon, brothers, Vasco D. Jones (Margaret, deceased), Benjamin A. Jones (Barbara, deceased), and Carroll W. Jones (Clara, deceased), and by her loving grandson, Derek R. Berry.
A graduate of Columbia High School in Tyrrell County, she attended East Carolina Teacher’s College and was first employed with the ASC Office in Columbia. In 1954, she married Horace and together enjoyed 61 years of marriage until his passing in 2015. Upon their move to Perquimans County, she worked as a teacher’s assistant in the kindergarten class at Hertford Grammar School where she retired following 15 years of employment. Along with her husband, she owned and operated Old Hickory Antiques next to their home for many years. A faithful member of Hertford Baptist Church and its Hannah Holmes Circle, she had been active in the Vision Sunday School Class having served as its president, and through the years assisted in church with teaching the 3-5 and 9-12 year-old children.
Surviving are her two daughters, Joan Harrell (Joe) of Hertford and Patsy Berry (Tony) of Elizabeth City; two sons, Eric Cohoon (Marci) of Hatteras and Alex Cohoon of Hertford; a brother, Max Jones (Cil) of Germantown, MD; seven grandchildren, Cristin (Justin), Joshua (Randi), Dustin, Allie (Kyle), Jordan (Ryan), Sam, and Gracie; four great-grandchildren, Colten, Adler, Vera, and Margot; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Hertford Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Dario Ruvarac. A private burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery and will be conducted by her niece, The Rev. Gina Miller. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the church service on Sunday, and all other times at the residence.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to her caregivers, Nina and Lisa Figgs, and Helen Banks for the loving care provided to Mrs. Cohoon during her time of need.
