Morton Downey

   Morton Downey, 92, of Paradise Road, Edenton, NC, died Sunday, December 22, 2019, in Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

   Mr. Downey was born in Clay County, Kentucky on October 8, 1927, and was the son of the late Henry Downey and Lucy Witt Downey McDaniel. A retired cook in Tug Boat Operations, he had served in both the US Navy and the Merchant Marines.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Rountree Downey; and by two half-brothers, Charles and Donald McDaniel.

   Surviving are two sons, Morton, Jr. and Terry Downey; his step-children, Sylvia Tynch of Edenton and Alton Daniels of Spotsylvania; special friends, Juanita Brown, Billie Jean Evans, and Marcella Bergeron, all of Ohio; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

   A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, January 4, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either: Chowan River Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, or to Edenton Prime Time Assisted Living, and directed for use in the Resident’s clothing needs.
