   Mildred Byrum Gregory, 93, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Monday, December 18, 2023 in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.

   Mrs. Gregory was born in Perquimans County on August 27, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Oscar Lucius and Eva Copeland Byrum. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilton Allee Gregory, a sister, Hilda Smith, and by brothers, Clarence, Ardell, and Raleigh “Buddy” Byrum.

   A homemaker, she was a lifelong member of Evangelical Methodist Church where she had been active through the years, and was particularly instrumental in assisting the church youth in quiz bowls and various other church functions. A true prayer warrior, she ministered to the sick and often made hospital visits to encourage and pray for those in need. Her devout commitment to prayer was not only a personal practice but a profound gift she generously shared with others. Whether in times of joy or moments of despair, Mildred Gregory stood as a pillar of strength, offering solace through heartfelt prayers that brought comfort and hope to countless souls.

   Among her many enjoyments, she loved gardening and working in her yard. Her dedication to planting flowers wasn't just a hobby; it was a testament to her deep appreciation for beauty and the simple pleasures of life. Each petal, each leaf meticulously cared for, was a reflection of her nurturing soul and unwavering patience.

   Surviving are her two daughters, Sheila G. Evans (husband, Raymond “Squirrel”) of Elizabeth City and Janet F. Klein (husband, Dan) of South Mills; a son, David W. Gregory (wife, Tracy) of Hertford; five grandchildren, Chris Evans, Cody Gregory, James Klein (wife, Megan), Diane Klein, and Amanda Klein; and two great-grandchildren, James and Rain Klein.

   Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Old Sanctuary of Evangelical Methodist Church, Elizabeth City, and will be conducted by Pastors C.D. White and Richard Meservey. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family any time at Sheila and Raymond’s home, 1166 Four Forks Road, Elizabeth City, and with all family members being available at their home as well on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

   Flowers are welcomed, or memorial contributions may be made to Evangelical Methodist Church, 820 Old Okisko Road, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
