Melvin Thomas Jethro, 84, of 1389 NC 32 North, Corapeake, NC, died Wednesday, October 25, 2023 in Gates House Assisted Living, Gatesville.
Mr. Jethro was born in Washington County on June 17, 1939 and was the son of the late Charlton Benjamin “C.B.” and Edna Earl Goodwin Jethro. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Toppin; by brothers, Murray and Delvin Jethro; and by his son-in-law, Les Bass.
Retired from Perry Glass Company after more than 20 years of employment, he was a member of Eureka Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, was a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, and had been active in the Baptist Men. Community involvement included his former membership in the Gates County Lions Club and the Gates County Rescue Squad. He had served in both the United States Army and the North Carolina National Guard.
Surviving is his wife of over 57 years, Linda Bunch Jethro; their children, Laura Bass-Decker (husband, Bruce) of Wakefield, VA and Neil Jethro (wife, Stacie) of Greenville; two sisters, Evelyn Dail of Edenton and Ruby Copeland of Hertford; a brother, Phillip Jethro of Edenton; five grandchildren, Alexis Bryson (husband, Will), Noelle Bader (husband, Xavier), Jessie Perez, Ian Jethro, and Amber Perry (husband, Barrett); and five great-grandchildren, Rylee, Aiden, Beau, Kennedy, and Olivia.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Eureka Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. David Lawson and the Rev. Cameron Currin. The private burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton. Friends are invited to join the family in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of both Gates House Assisted Living and Albemarle Home Care & Hospice for the comfort provided their loved one during his period of declining health.
