Melissa Pullin Fields

Melissa Pullin Fields, 53, of 715 McMullan Street, Unit 203, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024, in ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, with her husband by her side.

Melissa was born in Raleigh on July 2, 1971, and was the daughter of June Henning Pullin of Edenton and the late Gerald McLaren Pullin, Sr. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry and Robert Pullin.

A graduate of Mary Washington College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and elementary education, she later received her master’s degree in library sciences degree from East Carolina University, and her school administration credentials from Elizabeth City State University. She had retired from the Perquimans County School System, beginning her career there as a teacher and media coordinator, serving as the principal at both Perquimans Central and Perquimans High schools, and lastly as the school systems chief academic officer for curriculum and instruction. In 2019 she was named the Wells Fargo Northeast Region Principal of the Year.

Many in the area and beyond will remember Melissa for her part in “Vinyl Night” at Edenton Bay Trading Company. She and her husband started that ten years ago, and as she said, “built relationships with people that are really special—you can’t describe it.”

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 31 years, Eddie; their children, Breann Evans (husband, Samuel) of Edenton and Dustyn Fields (wife, Tyler) of Titusville, FL; her brother, Darek Pullin (wife, Beth) of Roanoke, VA; three grandchildren, Ty, Trot, and Eden Evans; and many, many friends and extended family members.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 3rd, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the home of Steve and Sheila Evans, 117 White’s Landing Road, Edenton; or on Wednesday, September 4th, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Edenton Bay Trading Company, 407 S. Broad Street, Edenton.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, September 7th, at 4:00 p.m. in the Perquimans County High School gymnasium, and will be conducted by longtime friend, David Stevenson, and the Rev. Elizabeth Polk. Friends may visit with the family in the school’s media center immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Melissa P. Fields scholarship fund at the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, P.O. Box 337, Hertford, NC 27944 or via the electronic link below. The scholarship fund will be awarded to individuals seeking a career in education.

Melissa long ago made the decision to be an Organ Donor. Her family today is comforted that even in their loss, she has thus far saved three lives through her gift, with the potential to help even more.

Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting the family with arrangements and online condolences may be made by visiting www.millerfhc.com.
