Mattie Cox Johnson

Mattie Elizabeth Cox Johnson, 90, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2025, in Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, VA.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Pasquotank County on April 20, 1934, and was the daughter of the late Mary Jane Cox. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Johnnie Eugene Johnson, a son, Johnnie Johnson, Jr., sister, Peggy Gordon, and by a grandson, C.W. Betts, III.

Retired as property manager from SRM Realty, she was a member of Corinth Baptist Church.

Surviving are her two daughters, Barbara Johnson (Wade Betts) and Janet Johnson, both of Elizabeth City; three sons, Daryl Johnson (Becky) of Elizabeth City, Walter Johnson (Diana) of Church Hill, TN, and David Johnson (Frances) of Elizabeth City; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandson.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in New Hollywood Cemetery and will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Greg Carr.
