Mary Smith Watson

   Mary Ellen Smith Watson, 79, of Memory Lane, Chocowinity, NC, and a former longtime resident of Edenton, died Friday, December 8, 2023 in her home.
   Mary was born in Chowan County on July 5, 1944 and was the daughter of the late Robert Wilson and Mary Lois Todd Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. “Roy” Watson, Jr.; her step-daughter, Charity Dawn Watson; sisters, Gloria Jean Roth and Carolyn Burgess; and by brothers, Elbridge, Robert, and John Smith.
   A retired LPN from Chowan Hospital (now ECU Health), she later enjoyed working for Dr. Cris Reynolds at Edenton Urology for many years. Mary loved spending time with her family and friends especially at the bowling alley or Twin Lakes where she won many medals and trophies bowling or playing cornhole. She, also, enjoyed many years snow skiing all over the country with her husband, Roy, and taking cruises with him, too. But…quite possibly her most favorite thing to do was watch Days of Our Lives. She never missed an episode until her health no longer permitted her to view it, and had traveled for many years to meet and greets to meet the actors. Her autographed hourglass was one of her most prized possessions. The fun-loving and adventurous spirit she possessed helped her live her life to the fullest.
   Surviving is her sister, Ruth Groff of Hubert; step-sons, Michael Watson (wife, Ruth) of Knoxville, TN and Steven Watson (wife, Jamie) of Panama City, FL; three step-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. Mary will be missed by all her nieces and nephews who lovingly referred to her as “Nanny”.
   A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 13th, at 1:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery and will be conducted by the Rev. Jay Rivenbark.
