Martha Louise Bateman, 100, formerly of Laura Lee Street, Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Friday, September 21, 2018 in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.

    Miss Bateman was born in Pasquotank County on May 6, 1918, and was the daughter of the late Leondious Burfoot and Margaret Corbett Bateman. Retired from hotel management having been employed in the Washington D.C. area for many years, she was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Margaret Turner, Beulah James, Dorothy Pritchard, and Marjorie Freeman; and by five brothers, William J., Burfoot, Ralph, Kenneth, and Joseph Bateman.

    Surviving are her sister-in-law, Affie Bateman of Elizabeth City; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

   Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Riverside Baptist Church, and will be conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Jason Davis. A private burial will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery.  Friends are invited to visit with the family in the church immediately following the service on Monday.

    The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the nurses and staff at Elizabeth City Health and Rehab for all the care and comfort they gave to Miss Bateman during her time of need.
