Marion Frank Markham

Marion Frank “Marty” Markham, 83, of Elizabeth City, passed peacefully into the arms of his Heavenly Father on March 17, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of family after a sudden illness.

Born on December 18, 1941, to the late Benjamin Franklin Markham Jr. and Ruth Wood Markham-Betts (Oscar). Marty grew up in Elizabeth City with a spirit as lively as it was endearing. He had a knack for fast cars and playful mischief in his younger years, leaving behind fond memories of his adventurous soul.

Marty’s love story began at a school dance, where he met the love of his life, Joyce Raye Evans. Although both attended with other dates, Marty seized the moment and asked Joyce for her number, sparking a bond that would last a lifetime. Married on June 17, 1961, at Riverside Baptist Church, Marty and Joyce shared 64 beautiful years together, raising their two cherished children, Rene and Kevin, and later doting on their seven grandchildren and great-grandson. Marty’s devotion was unwavering, especially in Joyce’s later years when he cared for her with unmatched love and compassion during her battle with dementia, steadfastly by her side until her passing on January 5, 2025.

Marty’s legacy extends through his beloved family, including his children: Rene (grandchildren Ryan and wife Erin with son Graysen; Sara; Michael and Melina) and Kevin with wife Tanya (grandchildren Sydney, Alex, and Nathalie). He is also survived by his sister Susan (the late Kent Goodwin), brother Benji (Becky), and Joyce’s siblings Raymond Evans (Sheila) and Kay (the late Baxter Sawyer), along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who brought immense joy to his life. Marty is preceded in death by his mother, father, and brother Jerry Markham (Linda).

A man of boundless charm and zest, Marty never met a stranger. To know him was to love him—a true treasure to all who crossed his path. He found joy in fast cars, internet gaming, politics, genealogy, history, boating, and above all, time spent with his family. Marty’s faith was the cornerstone of his life, as a lifelong and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He also delighted in fellowship with history enthusiasts as a member of the Sons of Confederacy. During his long career at Sawyer’s House of Furniture, Marty forged lifelong friendships and lasting memories. After retiring, he dedicated his time to being an extraordinary grandfather, delighting in the company of his grandchildren and great-grandson and being an amazing husband.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Diana McClanahan, a devoted caretaker and dear friend, as well as to the compassionate caregivers and staff at the DaVita Center, Albemarle Home Health, Hospice and Sentara Norfolk General, whose kindness and impeccable care was much appreciated by the family.

Marty’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of love, laughter, and lasting memories lives on through his family and friends.
