Marie Gooch Doughty, 72, of 304 Riverby Farm Road, Edenton, NC, died Monday, September 27, 2021 in her home where she was cared for by her family.
Mrs. Doughty was born in Norfolk, VA on August 24, 1949, and was the daughter of the late T.L. “Lee” and Emily Smithson Gooch. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Tom and Lee; and by her husband of 32 years who died in 2001, Bruce S. Doughty. She often said their marriage was made in Heaven, getting along and doing everything together. Fishing with each other every day was time spent that she always cherished. Truly, Bruce was the love of her life.
A member of Central Baptist Church in Portsmouth, VA, since her move many years ago to Chowan County, she had attended Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church. A retired secretary, working for more than 30 years with different companies, her last work was with Leon Nixon Catering. She often said Leon was the best boss she ever had.
Surviving are two daughters, Anne Marie Wright (Paul Winslow) and Gloria Doughty, both of Edenton; three grandsons, Tyler Schwarm (wife, Annie), Austin Schwarm, and Hunter Schwarm (Brittany Mick); and four great-grandsons, Conner, Deegan, Fisher, and Dallas Schwarm. Also surviving is her brother, Jimmy Gooch of Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members, including her niece Abbie White, who shared time with others in providing care and comfort to Mrs. Doughty.
A gathering for family and friends will be held Sunday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton. A private graveside service will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
