Lyle Edson Dewees, Jr., 65, of 201 Oak Ridge Drive, Edenton, NC, died Saturday, September 7, 2024, in ECU Health Medical Center, Greenville.
Mr. Dewees was born in Prince Georges County, Maryland, on July 8, 1959, and was the son of the late Lyle E., Sr. and Betty Travers Dewees.
A retired lineman with PEPCO, he was a member of Local 1700, The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Since moving to Edenton, he enjoyed membership in Edenton United Methodist Church and Unanimity Masonic Lodge #7, A.F. & A.M. Lyle was a man of many talents and hobbies, a true artist and lover of life that passed many of these artistic qualities onto his children and subsequently his grandchildren. An avid waterman, Lyle spent much of his life aboard boats that he worked hard to rebuild and restore. One of his favorite pastimes was spending the day out on the water baiting, dropping, and pulling in crab pots to enjoy with family. When he wasn’t restoring a boat he could be found in a garage rebuilding cars, go carts, ATVs, and a multitude of other motorcraft. Also a sportsman, Lyle enjoyed hunting all varieties of game. From duck to deer, Lyle could quote you the season, the weaponry allowed, the license necessary, and the bag limit of each animal. In his midlife, Lyle took on woodworking, embracing both his love of the water and his love of hunting. From the most stable of deer and duck blinds to the most intricate of duck decoys and beautiful, dainty crosses, Lyle could often be found in the woodshed he built behind his home. Not only a woodworker, but a true artist, when he wasn't working with a lathe and chisel, he could be found hand painting not just his decoys but also beautiful pieces of plaster cast art he had created or even tiny trains and many other toys that he built by hand for his youngest son and grandsons. Later in life, he truly enjoyed the art of theatre and music, often found at a play or musical in which his son was performing or on a football field watching his boy perform in the marching band. One of his greatest joys in all his life was spending time with his grandchildren. Whether it was laying on the floor reading stories, or answering the same question a million times, or even wondering out loud how on earth one little girl could talk so much, he truly enjoyed and embraced his role as Grandad. Surviving is his wife, Michelle Deuvall Dewees; two daughters, Elizabeth Taylor (husband, Nik) and Jennifer Dewees; two sons, Lyle Dewees III (wife, Christi) and Matthew Dewees; his sister, Karen Dewees; 11 grandchildren; and his faithful canine companions, Kiki and Howie.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 14th, at 1:00 p.m. in Edenton United Methodist Church and will be conducted by Pastor Elizabeth Polk. Those attending are encouraged to wear comfortable casual attire. The family will receive friends for a time of remembering and fellowship immediately following the service.
Flowers should be omitted and contributions in his memory be made to the Tri-County Animal Shelter, 138 Icaria Road, Tyner, NC 27980.
