Lt. Col. Nolan Clifton Alcock, U.S. Air Force, Retired, 94, of Moyock, NC, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2025, in Arden Courts, Virginia Beach, VA.
Mr. Alcock was born in Lenoir County on November 19, 1930, and was the son of the late Guy Clifton and Madge Carawan Alcock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Curtis Alcock (Sarah), a brother-in-law, Willie Carroll Brown, and by a son-in-law, Ronald Charles Smith.
A proud veteran, Lt. Col. Alcock served with dedication and honor in the United States Air Force and retired following 22 years of service. Following his military career, he co-owned and operated Poyner Oil Company for 18 years. A longtime member and deacon at Providence Baptist Church, other community involvement through the years included membership in the Shawboro Ruritan Club, Ducks Unlimited, NRA, American Legion, the Air Force Association, and was a former Freemason. In recognition of his weekly visits and bringing bananas to the residents at the local nursing home in Barco, he was affectionately known as the “Banana Man”. Nolan was a well-loved and respected man. He worked hard and helped anyone he could. He loved the Lord and his family. He enjoyed a long, full life and leaves us with a wealth of wonderful memories of our time with him. The world is truly a better place because he was in it.
Surviving is his loving wife of 70 years, Glenna Walker Alcock; two daughters, Catherine Logan of Moyock and Phyllis Alcock Smith of Chesapeake, VA; his son, Nolan Clark Alcock (Sharon) of Wake Forest; two sisters, Nancy Jean Brown of Pollocksville and Velma Dean Hollowell (Stuart) of Panama City, FL; a brother, Guy Wallace Alcock (Nancy) of Winterville, NC; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Nataliia), Michael (Heather), Matthew (Dawn), David (Nicole), Hannah, Andrew, Emily, and Aiden; 10 great-grandchildren, Nathan, Alexander, Xanden, Xelirra, Nikol, Braxten, Kiera, Kennedy, Vivian, and Sloane; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, at 2:00 p.m. in Providence Baptist Church and will be conducted by the Rev. Charles Rikard and his former pastor, the Rev. Charles Stevens. The service will be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/PBCShawboro. Burial with full military honors will follow in Moyock Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the church fellowship hall immediately following the graveside rites.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the building fund at Providence Baptist Church, PO Box 140, Shawboro, NC 27973.
