Lloyd McCoy "Pete" Owens

   Lloyd McCoy “Pete” Owens, of Hertford, NC, passed peacefully on Thursday, October 4, 2018, at the age of 96.

   “Pete” was born in Hertford on January 17, 1922, and was the son of the late William and Madie Nixon Owens. An Army veteran of World War II, he landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day, and also served in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Prior to his military service, and after his return, he was employed with Raymond Jordan Electric. Later he worked for many years at Hollowell Chevrolet, first as Parts Manager, and then as Shop Foreman. The years prior to his retirement, he was employed with Hollowell Oil Company.

   A loving father, a dutiful soldier, a modest man with a tender heart, and a humble servant to God and family is how he will be remembered by those who knew and loved him.

   In addition to his parents and other family members, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Vera Perry Owens.

   Surviving are his children, Lloyd Wayne Owens (Geri) of Elizabeth City, Linda Owens Johnson (Barry) of Wrightsville Beach, NC, Gordon McCoy “Pete” Owens (Kendal) of Belvidere, Wanda Richardson Ruble (Keith) of Wilmington, and Rhonda Powell (Robbie) of Carrsville, VA. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Jonny Owens, Jennifer Harris, Russ Swindell, Adam Richardson, Stacy Gregory, Tori Whitley, Rob Powell, Lindsey Smith, and Crystal Owens; eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. He also leaves two loving sisters, Joyce Taylor and Tiny Dunton.

   Graveside services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery, and will be conducted by Pastor Danny Meads and Pastor Don Caskie. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the graveside immediately following the service.

   In an effort to honor his wishes, the family requests that flowers be omitted, and contributions be made to: Wounded Warrior Family Support, 11218 John Gait Blvd., Suite 103, Omaha, NE 68137; or to: Dare Challenge, P.O. Box 123, Wanchese, NC 27981.

   The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the loving support and care given to them and their loved one by the staff of Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation Center.
