Linwood G. Boynton

Linwood G. Boynton, 81, of Hertford, NC, passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

Born on August 27, 1943, in Jefferson, Maine, he was the son of the late Pearl and Marie Feyler Boynton. Linwood graduated from Lincoln Academy in Jefferson, Maine and went on to serve his country with honor and distinction, becoming the youngest Chief Warrant Officer ever commissioned in the US Army. After the military, he went on to have a long career in maintenance supervision and risk management with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Perquimans County Schools, and Dare County Schools, from which he retired. His commitment to service extended to his community, where he served for many years in the Hertford Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Bear Swamp Hunt Club and the American Legion Post 126, and could often be found hunting, working on projects around the garage, tinkering with his 1969 corvette, or spending time with his family in North Carolina and Maine. He had a love for auto racing from a young age, thanks to his late Uncle Clint Feyler, and he and Bobbie were frequent visitors to the local speedway on Friday nights.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend, he is survived by his wife Bobbie Boynton, two daughters, Nancy Jennings (Stuart) and Beth Metcalf (Ray), his grandchildren Lianna Jennings (Austin), Joshua Jennings (Tatiana), and Caroline Metcalf, great-grandson Jett Jennings, brothers Earland Boynton (Marion) and Larry Boynton (Mona), sister Margeret Boynton, sister-in law Sharon Boynton (Dennis), and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Tommy Tilley, Joseph Webb, and special to him was Todd Tilley (Candy), who became both his stepson and friend late in life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Francis Boynton, Roger Boynton, Dennis Boynton, Pauline Brann, and Robert Boynton.

Known for his kind heart, mischievous smile, and quick wit, Linwood will be dearly missed by all who loved him.

A gathering and time of visitation will be held Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home, 1125 Harvey Point Road. Casual attire is encouraged.
