Lewis Henry Perkins, Jr.

Lewis Henry Perkins, Jr., 80, died June 13, 2021, in Tampa, Florida.

Born on November 15, 1940, he was the son of Lewis Henry Perkins Sr. and Clarissa Harrell Perkins. He grew up in Gatesville, North Carolina, graduated from Gatesville High School as valedictorian of his class and received his civil engineering degree from North Carolina State University. Lewis Jr. was an avid N.C. State Wolfpack fan and admired Coach Jim Valvano. After receiving his M.B.A. from William and Mary, he later moved to Tampa, Florida where he was employed by A.D. Morgan Corporation as Project Manager until his retirement. He was married to the late Cheryl Joyner and was an attentive partner to her during her life. Lewis never had children of his own, but his nephews and nieces were important to him.

Sports were his passion despite his physical disability that never slowed him down. He walked, jogged, and loved to play golf as often as he could.

Lewis was known for his quick wit and infectious laugh. He often commented on the absurdity of many political and social issues with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters Lois Ann Perkins Benton (Elmo) and Florence “Polly” Perkins Butler (Kenneth); his deceased brother Charlie’s widow, Sandy Perkins; nieces Debbie Benton Shirley (Rodney), Jean Benton (Les), Jeanette Benton Hart (Dennis), Kara Butler Haltiwanger (Garrett), Stefanie Fearrington (Doug); and his nephews Warren Benton (Andrea) and Bradley Perkins (Shelley); and special friend Crystal Tipille.
