LeRoy Wood

   Mevlyn LeRoy Wood, 81, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2024 in Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, Elizabeth City.

   LeRoy was born in Pasquotank County on July 23, 1942, and was the son of the late Wallace Mevlyn and Frances Elizabeth Singleton Wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Wood.

   As a young man and into adulthood he always enjoyed times spent on the family farm in the Durant’s Neck community of Perquimans County overlooking the Albemarle Sound. A retired aircraft leader, he had been employed with the US Coast Guard Base in Elizabeth City for over 20 years. Mechanically inclined, he loved to tinker on antique cars and had the skills to create or fix anything he put his hands on. A motorcycle enthusiast, he owned various motorcycles over the years, his favorites being his Harley Davidsons, an Indian, and a custom 3 wheeled motorcycle. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1847 in Elizabeth City.

   Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Sandra Dail Wood; two sons, Michael Wood and David Wood (wife, Teresa), both of Elizabeth City; a granddaughter, Rachel Wood; and two great-grandchildren, Marley Spence and Bentley Allen; and his large feline family which includes his dear “Mandy.”

   Friends may visit with family on Thursday, February 8, from 12 to 3 p.m. in David and Teresa’s home, 698 Mount Hermon Church Road, Elizabeth City.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SPCA of Northeastern North Carolina, 102 Enterprise Drive, Elizabeth City, NC 27909.
