Juanita Virginia Spivey Chappell, 92, of Hertford, NC, and formerly a longtime resident of Belvidere, passed away Saturday, January 9, 2021 in Elizabeth City Health and Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Chappell was born in Chowan County on September 24, 1928, and was the daughter of the late Irving Diaz and Carrie Parrish Spivey. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was the oldest surviving member of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church and loved to attend as long as her health permitted.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gailey Lee Chappell; a daughter, Betty Chappell Sawyer; a grandson, C.W. "Trey" Overton, III; and by two brothers, Harvey and Irving Trotman Spivey.
Surviving are her two daughters, Peggy Chappell Spruill (husband, Billy) of Hertford and Vickie Chappell Overton (husband, C.W.) of Belvidere; five grandchildren, Lisa Sawyer Jackson (husband, Sean), Lori Sawyer Haines (husband, Caleb), Thomas Wayne "Buddy" Sawyer (wife, Amy), Melanie Spruill Shoaff (husband, Chris), and Amy Spruill Comoroski (husband, Steve); nine great-grandchildren, two great-great-granddaughters; her sister-in-law, Doris Spivey, two nieces, Arlene Weeks (husband, Bobby) and Sandra Rountree (husband, David), and a nephew, Mark Spivey (wife, Donna).
Due to concerns associated with the Covid-19 Pandemic, a private graveside service will be held Tuesday in Cedarwood Cemetery. No formal visitation at the funeral home or at their residence is planned, and those who wish may offer their condolences on the funeral home website, www.millerfhc.com, or by social media, cards, or phone calls.
Memorial contributions may be made either to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, 2nd Floor, Norfolk, VA 23507 or to a charity of one's choice.
