John Wayne “Pappy” Castello, 75, of Powellsville, NC, passed Friday, August 9, 2024, in ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Mr. Castello was born in Hertford County on January 30, 1949, and was the son of the late John Rudolph and Anna Belle Bowen Castello. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lynette Willoughby.
Retired as an equipment installer with CenturyLink, he was a gifted carpenter having built his own home. A member of Powellsville Baptist Church, other membership enjoyed included both the Powellsville Vol. Fire Department and Colerain Vol. Rescue Squad where he retired from each with over 20 years of service to the communities. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing and most importantly spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an Army veteran.
Surviving is his wife of 55 years, Diana Garner Castello; his daughter, Tammy Castello Harrell (husband, Edward) of Colerain; his brother-in-law, Wayne Willoughby of Ahoskie; four grandchildren Pristina Skinner (husband, William, and their children, Jarvis and Charlotte), Tabitha Skinner (husband, Thomas), both of Edenton, and Jackson and Sheree Harrell, both of Colerain; a niece, Jennifer Smithwick (husband, Ben, and their children, Savannah, Dexter, and Kyle) of Windsor; a nephew, J.T. Willoughby (wife, Lindsey) of Ahoskie; and other nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews and extended family members.
A private gathering will be held by the family.
