John Scott Barrow

John Scott “Johnny” Barrow, 71, of 621 McMullan Ave., Edenton, NC. passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2024 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
Mr. Barrow was born in Chowan County on September 25, 1952, and was the son of the late Jack Herman and Mary Leora Bunch Barrow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Ronnie Sawyer.
A graduate of East Carolina University where he was a pitcher for the Pirates baseball team, he was an outstanding John A. Holmes High School alumnus, math teacher and coach. He dedicated his life and passion to the students and school. Following retirement, he served as the announcer at Aces Stadium on Friday nights. Other enjoyments included serving as a groundskeeper for the Edenton Steamers from the team’s very first season, a role he continued as his health permitted. Later he served as the Steamers scorekeeper. Besides his love of baseball, he held a special place in his heart for his church. A faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church, he had served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and as chairman of both the Personnel and Finance committees.
Surviving is his wife of 25 years, Nancy Twiddy Smith Barrow; a daughter, Leslie S. Fuller (husband, Blake, and their children, Holden and Sydney) of Edenton; a son, Judson Smith (wife, Lauren, and their children, Parker, Ella Kate, and Emmalyn) of Willow Spring; two sisters, Harriet Sawyer Rountree (husband, Ronnie) and Mary Jo Bass (husband, Donald), both of Edenton; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He dearly loved his family, and his grandchildren were the joy of his life.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Dr. Koby Strawser. Friends may visit with the family at a reception in the social hall immediately following the church service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 South Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932, and be designated for the Parking Lot Fund.
