Joan Cobb Boswell

   Joan Cobb Boswell, 89, of Chowan Garden Apartments, Edenton, NC, passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2023 in ECU Health Chowan Hospital.

   Born in Chowan County on February 9, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Clyde C. Cobb, Sr. and Dasie Lee Davis Cobb. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Joseph Lynn Boswell; her daughter, Cynthia Lynne Boswell; and by her brother, Dr. Clyde C. Cobb, Jr.

   Surviving is her brother, Richard E. Cobb (wife, Patricia) of Martinsville, VA; her children, Linda J. Boswell of Selma, J. Bradley Boswell of Washington, DC, and Jennifer B. Greene (husband, Kevin) of Raleigh; four grandchildren, Ryan C. Ward (wife, Erica) of Summerville, SC, Brooke Ward Motyl (husband, Michael) of St. Augustine, FL, and J. Hayden Greene and Connor D. Greene, both of Raleigh; and four great-grandchildren, Isabel and Emma Ward, and Carter and Brody Motyl. She is also survived by her special “’52 Girls”, a group she graduated with from high school who were dear to her heart.

   Mrs. Boswell was a banker for 36 years, and retired as a Vice President of Central Fidelity Bank. At the time of her retirement she was the Officer in Charge of the main office at the World Trade Center in Norfolk, VA.

   During her professional life, Mrs. Boswell was very active in civic affairs. Involvements included: member of Legislative, Education and Community Affairs Committee of the Virginia Beach Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Cooperative Education Program for Virginia Beach Schools. Active in Neptune Festival events, she was on the Festival Ball and General Operating Committees. She served as Chair Speaker for the Virginia Beach Clean Community Commission, Coordinator of Contribution Campaign for Friends of Virginia Wesleyan College, Board member of the Virginia Beach Pops Orchestra, the Regional Coordinator of the United Way Campaign, Advisory Board Member of the Vocational and Technical Education Center, President, Board Member, Director of Budget for the American Cancer Society, Executive Committee for the March of Dimes, Chaplain and Hospitality Committee of the National Association of Bank Women, member of the National Federation of Business and Professional Women, was the bank representative for the Azalea Festival Norfolk, and Treasurer of the Great Neck Estates Civic League. Since moving to Edenton, she had served as a Board member of the Edenton Cotton Mill Museum, had been a volunteer for the Chowan Arts Council, a member of the Friends of the Library, was a faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church and the Laura Harrell Sunday School Class where she experienced a wonderful study of the Bible.

   A gathering of family and friends will be held Friday, December 15th from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Edenton Baptist Church. The burial will be private.
