Jimmy Modlin

   James Edward “Jimmy” Modlin, MSgt., US Air Force Retired, 89, of Blue Ridge Trail, Windsor, VA, died Thursday, January 23, 2020, in Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk, VA.

   Mr. Modlin was born in Hertford County, NC on March 24, 1930, and was the son of the late Clarence Elmer and Lula Caroline Hughson Modlin. A 1949 graduate of Gatesville High School, he retired from the United States Air Force and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. A member of Cool Spring Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon, he was a former member of the Hall Ruritan Club.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Anna Catheryn Griner Modlin; his brother, Shelton Modlin; his sisters, O’Dell Mitchell, Deanie Perry, and Thelma Ewell; and by a son-in-law, Steven Patrick.

   Surviving are three daughters, Debra G. Patrick of Welaka, FL, Carrie M. Hearn of Windsor, VA, and Jennifer M. Simpson and husband, Keith, of Suffolk; a sister, Javan Beitinger of Anchorage, AK; three grandchildren and their families, Cole Hearn (fiance` Ashleigh and their daughter, Lacey), Courteney Simpson (boyfriend Justin), and April McCully (husband David and their sons, Lane and J.D.); a sister-in-law, Betty Modlin; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

   Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. in Cool Spring Baptist Church and will be officiated by his pastor, The Rev. Joe McKnight. Burial with full military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Cool Spring Baptist Church, in care of Merwin Bauerle, 460 US Hwy 13 South, Eure, NC 27935.

   The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Heartland Hospice and nurses Melanie and Sheniqua; caregivers Zayra, Kathleen, and his niece Marcia Perry; and to the Suffolk Meals On Wheels Program.
