Jean Hollowell Leary, 94, of The Landings of the Albemarle, and formerly of 2209 Rocky Hock Road, died Monday, January 6, 2025, in ECU Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
Mrs. Leary was born in Chowan County on October 23, 1930, and was the daughter of the late Haywood Thomas “Tommy” Hollowell, Sr. and Helen Eason Hollowell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Thomas Wayne “Tommy” Leary who died in December of 2019.
A graduate of Chowan High School, she was her class Valedictorian. After marriage made her a homemaker and farmer’s wife, Mrs. Leary also worked in the family business, Green Leaf Plant Farm, and yet still found the time to care for elderly family members, run errands for friends and neighbors, and have dinner on the table when it was time to eat. She was a faithful member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church as long as health allowed and was active in the women’s missionary and circle groups.
Surviving are two sons, Tony Stillman Leary and Terry Wayne Leary (wife, Lisa), all of Edenton; a sister, Judy Phthisic of Belvidere; two brothers, James Hollowell of Florence, SC and H.T. Hollowell, Jr. of Raleigh; four grandchildren, T.J. Leary of Chesapeake, Lindsey Lindsay (husband, Nick) of Black Mountain, Tyler Leary (wife, Emily) of Edenton, and Elizabeth Jordan (husband, Heath) of Hobbsville; four great-grandchildren, Tripp Leary, Grayson Leary, Clara Gray Jordan and Charlotte Jordan; and many nieces, nephews, and extended members of both the Hollowell and Leary families.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Matt Dupuy. The private burial will follow in the Leary Family Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the church immediately following the service.
