James Owsley “Jim” Planck, III, 84, of 134 Bayview Trail, Edenton, NC, passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2018, in Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
“Jim” was born in Washington, DC on June 12, 1934, and was the son of the late James O., Jr. and Frances Peach Planck. He attended Gonzaga and DeMatha high schools, and went on to the University of Maryland. He worked as a salesman and decorator for an upscale furniture store in Washington. A professional jazz musician as a rhythm guitarist, he played in a band around the D.C. area before entering the service. As an Army veteran, his service included work in radio communications. After separation from duty he worked as a customer engineer and a photographer in Washington. In the late 1960’s he ventured west to Arizona. There he graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a minor in Government. He worked in writing and photography, as an award-winning newspaper editor, and in marketing for various hospitals, colleges and universities. He moved to California in 1985 and worked in public relations for charity organizations. In 1991 he moved back to the east coast to Virginia and was a consultant in technical writing for telecommunications companies and government contractors in Northern Virginia. In 2016 he relocated to North Carolina for an enjoyable retirement. He was president of the MG Car Club in the Washington, D.C. area, the first MG car club in the country. Professional associations included president of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) in Tucson, Arizona and a consistent prize-winner with the Shenandoah Photography Society in Winchester, Virginia. Hobbies and areas of interest included cooking, music, books, and cars.
Surviving are his wife of nearly 42 years, Marybeth Baker Turner Planck; and his son, Jesse Planck and wife, Caidy, of Houma, Louisiana. Also surviving are Marybeth’s sons, Robert Turner and wife, Lisa, of Monticello, Minnesota, and Shawn Turner and wife, Erin, of Peyton, Colorado; and a brother-in-law, John Baker and wife, Rae Marie, of Bemidji, Minnesota. Together Jim and Marybeth shared six grandchildren, Jaxon, Tessa, Kasey, Callan, Reagan, and Kinsey.
A memorial service will be held Friday, October 12th, at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by the Rev. Joellyn St. Pierre. Friends may join the family in the funeral home the hour prior to services.
