Reverend James Robert Hulett, 85, of Elizabeth City, NC, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City.
Rev. Hulett was born in Prestonburg, Kentucky on August 22, 1938 and was the second son of the late Reverend Sewell Stephen Hulett and Mildred Marie Marr Hulett Turner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 65 years, Charlotte Esther Rogers Hulett, and by his brother, Paul Stephen Hulett.
A retired pastor of the Wesleyan Church, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who dearly cared for and supported his family in all aspects of their lives. A true man of God, he was a preacher in the Pilgrim Holiness Church and the Wesleyan Church in Kentucky, Ohio, and North Carolina for over 60 years. He pastored at Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church in Winfall for seven years. After retirement, he attended the First Church of the Nazarene and Fountain of Life Church in Elizabeth City. He also played an active role in the Kairos of North Carolina Prison Ministry in Elizabeth City.
Surviving are his children, sons, Gregory Keith Hulett (wife, Susan) of Virginia Beach, VA and Timothy Joseph Hulett of Elizabeth City; and daughter, Barbara Jane Hulett Turner (husband, Forrest) of Elizabeth City; grandchildren, Allie Turner Meads (husband, Eric), Timothy Robert Hulett (wife, Marisol), Matthew Ryan Hulett (wife, Alexandra), and Ashton Turner Roberson (husband, Brandon); and great-grandchildren, Evan Meads, Saige Hulett, Grace Hulett, Bruce Hulett, Waylon Roberson, and Madeline “Maddie” Roberson due to be born in April.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 21, at 1:00 pm in First Church of the Nazarene, 1085 Highway 17 South, Elizabeth City, and will be conducted by Reverend Kenneth Greenway. Friends may visit with the family in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Sentara Albemarle Medical Center for the care provided to Rev. Hulett and family during their time of need.
