Henry Garfield "Hank" Phelps, Jr.

   Henry Garfield “Hank” Phelps, Jr., 73, of 18630 NC 32 North, Roper, NC, died Tuesday, October 13, 2020 in Watauga Medical Center, Boone, NC.

   Mr. Phelps was born in Washington County on October 23, 1946, and was the son of the late Henry Garfield Phelps, Sr. and Nancy Hassell Phelps. The retired owner of Brooksville Furniture Company in Brooksville, FL, while living there, he and his wife were faithful members of the Christian Church in the Wildwood where he served as an Elder. Since they moved back “home” to the Roper area, he was a member of Philippi Church of Christ, the Christian Men’s Fellowship, and the Mid-County Ruritan Club.

   Surviving are his wife of nearly 29 years, Shelia Spruill Phelps; a daughter, Jody Phelps Austin and husband, Paul, of Columbus, OH; two sons, Craig A. Phelps and wife, Charity, of Creedmoor, and Mac Jones of Nashville; a sister, Lucy Rae Johnson of Edenton; three brothers, Milton Phelps of Creswell, Don Phelps of Williamsburg, VA, and Hal Phelps of Roper; and five grandchildren, Veronica and Victoria Austin, and Joshua, Shannen, and Samuel Phelps.

   A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center of Philippi Church of Christ, 74 Old Cherry Road, Creswell, and will be conducted by Ministers Glenn Brickhouse and Craig Phelps. The family will receive friends at the Family Life Center from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services on Saturday, and all other times at the residence. Masks and distancing measures are encouraged.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Philippi Church of Christ, 73 Old Cherry Road, Creswell, NC 27928, to be used for expansion and improvements to the Family Life Center to better serve the congregation and community.
