Haurice Ray Toppin, SFC, US Army Retired, 83, of 128 Cisco Road, Tyner, NC, died Thursday, February 13, 2020, in his home where he was cared for by his wife and children.
Mr. Toppin was born in Chowan County on June 5, 1936, and was one of 12 children born to the late Nolan B. and Jennie Parker Toppin. A retired Sergeant First Class after serving for 23 years in the United States Army, his primary duty was as a Military Policeman. After his service, he worked as a correctional officer with the Osceola County, Michigan, Sheriff’s Department, and retired from that position after 20 years of employment. A faithful member of Center Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, he also enjoyed membership in the Edward G. Bond Post #40 of The American Legion for over 50 years, and served as the Post Historian.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lillie Mae Beaman and Hazel Spruill; and by brothers, Troy, Maurice, Wilford, Guy, Garland, and Durwood Toppin.
Surviving are his wife of over 63 years, Shirley Mongold Toppin; a daughter, Regina Ray Toppin Anderson and husband, Pete, of Iva, SC; a son, Bruce Edward Toppin and wife, Melinda, of Hanahan, SC; a sister, Shirley Kirby of Tyner; two brothers, Earl Toppin of Wilmington and Larry Toppin of Crystal Springs, Miss; four grandchildren, Kristine, Tradd, Natalie, and Troy; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Russell Blanchard. Burial with military honors will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the funeral home and other times at the residence.
