Hattie Singletary Byrum, 93, of Pembroke Circle, Edenton, NC, died Tuesday, February 6, 2024 in ECU Health Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Byrum was born in Bladen County, NC on April 26, 1930, and was the daughter of the late June and Leota Hilburn Singletary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, West William Byrum, Jr., and by her brother, Dr. June Singletary, Jr.
A graduate of Bladenboro High School and later, Flora MacDonald College in Red Springs, NC with a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, she was a Home Demonstration Agent with the NC Extension Service in both Iredell and Chowan counties and had taught in the Edenton-Chowan School System at Chowan High and D.F. Walker schools.
A faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church, she had served her Lord as a G.A. Leader and Sunday School teacher. Community involvement included her membership in the Garden of Eden Club, the Monday Bridge Club, and the Democratic Women.
Surviving are her daughters, Virgina “Ginger” Byrum Vogedes (husband, Bill) of Edenton and Gail Byrum Carter (husband, Ernie) of Powellsville; grandchildren, Elizabeth “Betsy” Vogedes Hicks (Paul) of Edenton, Leigh Vogedes Hood (Daniel) of Raleigh, Stuart Long Brooks (Neel) of Winston-Salem, Kathryn Byrum Brooks (Stewart McLean) of Raleigh, Hinton Carter of New York, Mollie Carter Perry (Chris) of Raleigh, and Will Carter of Wilmington; great-grandchildren, Libba Hicks, Caroline Hood, and Mackay and West Brooks; and her sister-in-law, Betty Singletary of Raleigh.
A Celebration of her Life will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church and will be conducted by her pastor, The Rev. Dr. Koby Strawser. A private burial will be in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 South Granville Street, Edenton, NC 27932.
