Harold (Shaf) Lawrence Shafer, 86, of 160 Schooner Landing Drive, Edenton, NC, died Saturday, May 2, 2020 in his home where he was being cared for by his family.
Mr. Shafer was born in Sioux Falls, SD on November 6, 1933. The son of the late Harold N. Shafer and Laura M. Sunderman Shafer, he was raised with his three younger brothers, Gerald (Jack), Ken, and Ed. An Army veteran of the Korean War, he served in Intelligence and was stationed in Korea and Japan. After his military time, he returned to South Dakota to complete his education at South Dakota State University. He worked in Sioux Falls after graduation until beginning work with PPG in Pittsburgh, PA in 1964. He retired from PPG as the Director of Training and Development and moved with his wife Myrna to Buxton, NC. The couple moved to Edenton in 2003. A member of the Edenton United Methodist Church, Mr. Shafer enjoyed the fellowship of the Edward G. Bond Post 40 of The American Legion. He was an active volunteer with many different organizations throughout his adult life, including the National Parks Service at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the Chowan County Fair, and the Chowan Food Pantry.
In addition to his parents and brothers Ken and Ed, he was preceded in death by the love of his life for nearly 62 years, wife Myrna Marlene Weiske Shafer who died in September of 2019.
Surviving are their children, Shelley Haffner and husband, Rob, of State College, PA, Kevin Shafer and wife, Lori, of Travelers Rest, SC, Joel Shafer and wife, Mindy, of South Hill, VA, and Tim Shafer and wife, Tammy, of Windsor; seven grandchildren, Ryan and Eric Haffner, Megan Haffner Ladd, Dylan and Sean Shafer, Chantel Shafer Buck, and Brett Moran; six great-grandchildren, Cora and Garrett Haffner, Charlie Ladd, Ben, Aria, and Arabella Buck; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Due to the conditions and restrictions associated with the current Coronavirus Pandemic, a memorial service is being planned for a later date and those arrangements when complete will be announced by the family and on this website.
