Grady Woodfen Sumner, Jr.

   Grady Woodfen Sumner, Jr., 92, of 921 Liberty Street, Ahoskie, NC, died Sunday, March 15, 2020 in his home.

   Mr. Sumner was born in Hertford County on August 13, 1927, and was the son of the late Grady W., Sr. and Mary Gatling Sumner. A retired sales representative with North State Provision Company, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, Davie Masonic Lodge #39, A.F. & A.M. and had served in the United States Navy.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Sumner Goss and by a brother, Albert Sumner.

   Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Sophia Elaine Perry Sumner; two daughters, Elaine Sumner Beckman and husband, Ralph, of Williamsburg, VA and Sharon Sumner Tate and husband, Rick, of Raleigh; a son, Perry W. Sumner and wife, Janet, of Goldsboro; a sister, Lil S. Lipsitz of Emerald Isle; a brother, Hersey Sumner of Columbus, GA; four grandchildren, Adam Beckman, Ashley Beckman, Courtney Tate Abrams and husband, Thomas, and Sumner Tate; two great-granddaughters, Magnolia Beckman and Charlotte Abrams; and numerous nieces and nephews.

   A memorial service is being planned and those arrangements will be announced when the restrictions and precautions associated with the Coronavirus have eased.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, PO Box 649, Ahoskie, NC 27910.
