Glenda Kraus Hobbs

Glenda Kraus Hobbs, 81, of Desert Road, Corapeake, NC, stepped into glory Friday, September 17th, 2021, from the Elizabeth City Health and Rehab facility.

Mrs. Hobbs was born in Norfolk, VA on July 2, 1940, and was the daughter of the late Peter Jacob and Bernice Rood Kraus. Glenda was known for her kind spirit, the ability to find the best in others, and her genuine love for the Lord. She was sweet, with a splash of sassy, that always kept you smiling. Even as her disease progressed the Holy Spirit was constantly using her to speak to and influence others.

Glenda was an active member of Eureka Baptist Church until she moved to New Bern in 2014 to live with her daughter, Jennifer Hobbs-Swindell. She served in various capacities over the years at Eureka including librarian, secretary, Acteens Leader, working in Vacation Bible School, and was active in Women’s Missionary Union and Sunday School. After moving to New Bern, she was actively involved in several community Bible studies and attended Temple Baptist Church.

A 1961 graduate of the Louise Obici School of Nursing, she was a city girl who met and fell in love with a farm boy and moved to the country. She worked a short time in the field of nursing and then became a devoted full-time wife and mother. She worked with her husband for many years keeping the books and other farm tasks. Other employment over the years included jobs as a Teacher’s Assistant at Sunbury Elementary, work at Sunbury Hardware, Gates County Egg Farm, Wise Foods, and the Christian Book Store in Suffolk.

Surviving, her three children, Edward Ray Hobbs (Renee) and Jane Hobbs Chappell (Randall), both of Corapeake, and Jennifer Hobbs Swindell of New Bern; six grandchildren, Dillon Kyle Chappell (Hannah) of Corapeake, Caroline Swindell of Charlotte, Sarah Hobbs Blair (Joseph) of Hobbsville, Allyson Swindell of New Bern, Rebecca Hobbs (Cole Stallings) of Corapeake, and Carson Garrish of New Bern; and two great grandsons, Gabriel Chappell and Walter Blair. Also surviving are her sister, Kathy Kraus Hickock (Kirk) of Chesapeake, her sister-in-law Marjorie Kraus of Chesapeake, and many nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her loving and greatly missed husband, Walter Edward Hobbs; by her brother Neil Kraus; and by her son-in-law, Gray Swindell.

During her time in New Bern, family and friends assisted in her care. We firmly believe that her time in New Bern held off the progression of the disease for some time and are forever grateful for all those who assisted. Special thanks to Dora Davis and family, Reggie and Joleine Wright, Rene Lewis and children, Bob and Evonne Carver, Sarah Tellis, Thea Kincaid, Judith Epps, Nikia Hill, Lee Aring and the entire Temple & Tru-Fit staff who so graciously loved on her. The entire New Bern community loved and helped care for Glenda throughout her 5 years there and the family is forever grateful.

She spent her final years in Gates House Memory Care beginning in 2019, and moved to Elizabeth City Heath and Rehab in June of this year. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Gates House, EC Health & Rehab, and Amedisys Hospice for the care they provided. Special thanks to Rachel, Brooke, Tawana, and Yvonne at Gates House, to Leann and Danesha at EC H&R, and to Liz at Amedisys.

There will be a graveside service at the Riddick Family Cemetery in Sandy Cross, NC on Saturday, September 25th at 2pm for family and friends. Due to COVID precautions, no formal visitation is planned.
