George Ellis Drawdy, 84, of 1226 Rocky Hock Landing Road, Edenton, NC, died Friday, June 3, 2022 in his home where he was cared for by his family.
Mr. Drawdy was born in Volusia County, Florida on June 5, 1937, and was the son of the late Arnold James Drawdy and Rena Mae Price Drawdy Locke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Brown Drawdy.
Mr. Drawdy had a long career in the grocery business, coming to Edenton for the Winn-Dixie chain, and later owning and operating Rocky Hock Grocery. Community involvement was important to him and included his membership in Bethel Baptist Church and service in the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department. After moving from the Bethel community to Chowan County, he attended Rocky Hock Baptist Church and was a member of the Rocky Hock Ruritans. George was mindful of and often expressed how much he appreciated the Bethel and Rocky Hock folks embracing him and his family as they worshipped and worked together.
An Air Force veteran, he was a life member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Proud of the Flag, one hangs from his porch, and one will drape his casket.
Surviving is his wife, Kathleen Blanchard Drawdy; and his children, Vivian Sutton (Howard) of Hertford, Karen Ambrose (Donny) of Merry Hill and Neil Drawdy (Gordon) of Spring Hope; five grandchildren, Broc Sutton (Kelly), Kristen Myers (David), and Seaira, D.J. and Zack Ambrose; and six great-grandchildren, Brayden, Payton, Lizzy and D.J. Myers, Laura Rose Sutton and Jase Ambrose. Also surviving are Kathleen’s daughters and their families; Linda Layton (Brent) of Edenton and Pam Ellis (Keith) of Roper; grandchildren, Ashley Byrum (Joey), Blake Runyon, Ben Layton, Laura Flores (Luis), and Sean and James Ellis (Lydia); and great-grandchildren, Reed and Wade Byrum, Elizabeth and Lily Flores, and Tyson, Juniper and Judah Ellis.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 6th, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and will be conducted by the Revs. Howard Sutton and Stanley Nixon. The burial will be private in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family in the funeral home immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
